The 2013 China Sommelier Contest raised curtain in Hyatt On The Bund Hotel on September 7, 2013. As a series activity of Shanghai Wine Festival, China Sommelier Contest has been held in Hongkou District for four consecutive years. 10 contestants from Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Xi’an Qingdao and Guangzhou competed on the finals after taking written test, blind tasting and practical test. Finally, Liao Weiyi of Shangri-La Hotel in Jing’an District won the championship.
This contest was jointly sponsored by China Sommelier Association, Shanghai Wine Culture Exhibition Center and Asia Wine Institute. Brian Julyan, Chairman of Court of Master Sommeliers, is still the chief referee of this contest. He spoke highly of the Chinese contestants and encouraged them to learn more new things and enhance the standard of catering industry in China.
The Ministry-Municipal Cooperation Project, “Shanghai International Wine Trade and Service Functional Area”, has given professional training for wine industry professionals. Sommelier will be listed in the “National Category of Occupation Classification” and occupational standards will be made for this new occupation.
