Hongkou District achieved a year-over-year sales increase of 34.6 percent during the New Year holiday from December 30 to 31, 2023, a sampling survey from the district's commerce commission revealed.
Among these, shopping centers reported a year-over-year sales increase of 35.5 percent. Chain supermarkets saw an 18 percent increase. Specialty retail businesses reported a 20.6 percent rise. The catering sector achieved a 26.8 percent increase in sales compared to the previous year.
With the kick-off of the New Year's shopping season, Hongkou District's major commercial areas have targeted different consumer groups, launching a series of consumption-promoting activities under themes like "First Release Economy" and "Trend Economy", thus forming new regional consumption hotspots.
Ruihong Tiandi concluded the year in collaboration with nine major brands and new stores. Popular dining brands such as Tongren Four Seasons, Wuliguan, Xiaohe Tea House, Palan, KOIPLUS, and Dashen Taishen made concentrated appearances, attracting a large number of consumers with new scenes and flavors.
The Sinar Mas Plaza was transformed into an ice skating haven with a 1,200 square meter real ice rink, lighting up with dazzling light designs, dynamic DJ performances on ice, and a merry-go-round.
The North Bund's Raffles City the Bund, in collaboration with Disney China, presented the "Pixar Puffy Happiness Party" theme exhibition. Hongkou Plaza launched a Lucky BINGO battle, while the INLET held the first Shanghai Citizens' Digital Art Achievement Exhibition. Life Hub @ Up Bund hosted a New Year's Eve party and Bailian Quyang Shopping Center offered a special crosstalk performance.
North Bund Jinmao Fashion Center, Baohua Commercial Plaza, and other malls also introduced themed marketing events like "Golden Powder Festival" and "May All Be as You Wish", enhancing Hongkou's end-of-year and New Year atmosphere.
During the New Year period, various supermarkets in the district launched a variety of promotional activities in line with the New Year atmosphere, sparking a purchasing frenzy with attractively priced goods.
Century Lianhua held a New Year Goods Street bazaar, presenting a combination of "boss recommendations, super hot items, and New Year new products", with discounts. The Metro kicked off a pre-sale channel for New Year goods, offering seafood feasts and pre-sale prices for New Year gift boxes.
The Bailian Daojia app catered to residents' online New Year shopping needs, offering online benefits like 20 to 40 yuan coupons.
The district's markets made ample preparations in advance, according to the commerce commission.
In the markets, seasonal produce like winter bamboo shoots, lettuce, and matsutake mushrooms, along with a variety of meat, poultry, eggs, seafood, and fruits, were abundant and diverse, attracting continuous consumer traffic and presenting a joyous and harmonious festive atmosphere, the commission said.
