The District Science Commission said that in this year, the Hongkou Free Public Wireless LAN will cover a wider area. Residents in Hongkou District will be able to surf on Internet more conveniently. In 2012, North Sichuan Road has achieved a full coverage of wifi access point. Currently, citizens could surf on Internet with their mobile phones in all community affairs service centers, community health service centers, industrial and commercial administration offices in Hongkou District.
In 2011, Hongkou District began to optimize its infrastructure of telecommunication to support and promote the restructuring of regional industry, enhance the investment environment and the citizen’s quality of cultural life. Construction of wifi access point is an important part of telecom infrastructure construction. Since 2012, the district government has allocated special funds to guide and encourage real estate developers and property management companies to accelerate the optimization of telecommunication environment. WLAN constructors will obtain Internet use subsidies from the district government. By the end of March 2013, 633 wifi access points have been established in Hongkou District, and Hongkou Free Public Wireless LAN has covered 136 access points.
Currently, the Hongkou Free Public Wireless LAN has covered various public service venues in Hongkou District, including commercial streets, industrial parks, leisure facilities and resident service centers. The District Science Commission has designed a hand-painted wifi map to help citizens know the locations and access methods of wifi. On this map, all wifi access points have been marked with red signal radiation symbols, and citizens will find out the location of wifi access points conveniently. The District Science Commission has also laid symbols in all venues where Hongkou Free Public Wireless LAN is available. Citizens could get booklets from resident service stations to grasp the methods of using this wireless LAN. They could also visit the portal website of Hongkou District to watch videos on how to use free wireless LAN service.
