In a significant move to strengthen academic and economic ties, the Hongkou District People’s Government and City University of Hong Kong (CityU) have signed a memorandum of cooperation, signaling a new chapter in regional collaboration.
Hongkou Vice Director Zhang Wei and Professor Hor Sion Sin, Associate Vice President of CityU, officially signed the agreement on behalf of their respective parties.
CityU, established in 1984, is a globally recognized public research university with a strong focus on innovation and interdisciplinary studies.
Ranked among the world’s top 100 universities and the most internationalized university globally, CityU has established its leadership in fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, finance, and legal studies.
Hongkou, renowned for its vibrant financial sector and maritime commerce, offers strategic advantages as a hub for trade, innovation, and cultural exchange.
The agreement outlines collaborative efforts in talent development, academic research, and technology commercialization, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between the academic institution and the local government.
Wang Jue, Deputy Directorof the Shanghai United Front Work Department and Vice President of the Shanghai Overseas Friendship Association, emphasized the broader significance of the partnership, noting that enhanced cooperation between Shanghai and Hong Kong is crucial for national competitiveness.
“Hong Kong and Shanghai share deep cultural and economic ties. This agreement will unlock opportunities in financial collaboration, technological innovation, and cultural exchange,” Wang said.
Hongkou District Director Lu Ming expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting the district’s commitment to creating a diversified industrial ecosystem.
“With the establishment of this cooperation, we look forward to integrating CityU’s world-class academic resources with Hongkou’s strategic strengths. Together, we can drive innovation, nurture talent, and accelerate the commercialization of scientific achievements,” Lu said.
Professor Yang Mengsu, Senior Vice President of CityU, echoed this sentiment, praising Hongkou’s economic resilience and development progress.
He highlighted CityU’s advancements in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and financial technology as areas of potential synergy.
