Known as Shanghai General Hospital when founded on March 1, 1864, Shanghai First People's Hospital, was the largest hospital of western medicine at that time as well as one of the earliest of its kind in China among general hospitals of western medicine. Its name was changed to Gongji Hospital in 1877 and Shanghai Municipal First People's Hospital in 1953, respectively; it became Shanghai Red Cross Hospital in 1981, and developed into the First People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2002. As one of the first batch of hospitals accredited as Class A tertiary general hospitals (top-class hospitals in China) by the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China in 1992, it has been successively awarded as the Model Establishment in Shanghai for 13 times. These well-known medical personnel made unprecedented medical achievements in China: for example, the first hepatectomy, the first thumb reconstruction through toe transplantation, the first operation under acupuncture anesthesia, researching and manufacturing of the first domestic vector-cardiograph and the first prototype of domestic temporary cardiac pacemaker prototype, to name a few. All this has made significant contribution to the medical development in China and human health in Shanghai.
