Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded in 1976. As a comprehensive class A tertiary hospital integrating medical service, teaching, and scientific research for public welfare, it is the only national key integrated hospital of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine appraised by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Shanghai. It was formerly the fifth outpatient department for public funded free medical care in Shanghai. In 1952, Shanghai Municipal Government gathered famous doctors of Chinese Medicine in the city and all around the world together and established the first organization of traditional Chinese medicine in Shanghai called the Fifth Outpatient Department (FOD) to be in charge of the public funded free medical care for cadres in the city. At that time, a lot of well reputed doctors of traditional Chinese medicine worked in FOD, including Shi Youshan, Shi Youushan, and Tong Zhongyi in orthopedic department, Gu Bohua in surgical department, Lu Yuanlei, Yan Erling, Zhan Cigong, Zhang Fengjiao, Pang Yu, and Cheng Mengxue in medicine department, Zhang Zanchen in otolaryngology department, Zhu Xiaonan and Cheng Danian in gynecology department, Gu Kunyi, Lu Shouyan, Yang Yongxuan, and Huang Xianming in acupuncture department, and Wen Maokang in hemorrhoid department, and so on. FOD supplied in total 29 experts of traditional Chinese medicine, including 21 professors, to the new founded organizations of traditional Chinese medicine in the city in 1954 and 1956. Therefore, FOD is reputed as the birthplace of traditional Chinese medicine in Shanghai and the cradle of famous doctors of traditional Chinese medicine in Shanghai and even Jiangsu and Zhejiang Province. In January 1976, FOD merged with Shanghai Massage & Chinese Medicine Outpatient Department, and Nanchang Road Xinzhen Outpatient Department to form a new hospital which was named Yueyang Hospital for its location at Yueyang Road in Xuhui District. With growing comprehensive strength, the hospital was appraised as class A tertiary hospital of traditional Chinese medicine in 1994. The next year, the hospital moved to the new address at Ganhe Road in Hongkou District and expanded its scale of medical service to adapt to the new situation of development. In 1998, the hospital was approved to be modified into class A tertiary hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine and successfully transformed into a modern comprehensive hospital. In 2007, the hospital successfully passed the assessment of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine on the building of key hospital of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine. On the top of the list of class A tertiary hospitals of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine in China, it passed the reexamine of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2012 and began a new journey of leap-forward development.
The hospital currently has 31 clinical departments including department of Chinese medicine, department of surgery of traditional Chinese medicine, department of surgery of western medicine, gynecology department, pediatrics department, and so on, and 7 medical departments. With a staff of 1240, it has accommodation for 900 patients. The number of emergency services for outpatients reached 2.3 million. There are such modern medical equipments as 64 detector spiral CT, MRI, C type DSA, and so on. The value of them reached in total 170 million Yuan. There are also equipments for preparation of traditional Chinese medicine approved by GMP, one PCR lab approved by the Ministry of Health, and 5 Level III lab of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has relatively strong capacity in medical care, development of new clinical technology, major rescue, and the dealing of emergent public health events.
Sticking to the strategy of strengthening the hospital with talents, the hospital gradually developed a multi layer talents team, including the advanced talents team leading by chief scientists of the 973 program, leading talents of Shanghai, outstanding academic leaders of Shanghai, oriental scholars, and so on, and backup talents team composed of backup academic leaders, young talents, and so on. The well structured clinical team has 79 with a professional title of professor equivalent, 128 with a professional title of associate professor equivalent, and 99 tutors of master and doctor students. There are 2 chief scientists of the national "973" program, 1 outstanding young scientist supported by National Nature Science Foundation, 12 famous doctors of Chinese Medicine in Shanghai, 3 Oriental Scholars in Shanghai, 9 excellent clinical talents of traditional Chinese medicine of the country, 6 key academic leaders of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2 key academic leaders of Shanghai, 2 leading talents of Shanghai, and 2 excellent academic leaders of Shanghai.
After decades of discipline construction, the hospital has 1 key supporting discipline of the Ministry of Education, 3 key departments supported by the Ministry of Health, 7 key discipline of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 10 key departments supported by State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 clinical center of Shanghai, 2 key discipline of Shanghai, and 6 key departments supported by Shanghai Municipal government. There are 13 city level offices of famous doctor of traditional Chinese medicine or above, in which 5 are national level inheritance offices of famous doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. The cure for cervical vertigo, chronic aplastic anemia, gout, ulcerative colitis, menopausal syndrome, hemorrhoids, stress urinary incontinence, and other diseases has reached leading position in Shanghai and the whole country.
In 2012, the hospital successfully applied 20 research projects of National Natural Science Foundation, marking a double digit growth on the number of research projects for two consecutive years. So far, it has received 14 awards on scientific research at different levels. Among 18 patents applied, 10 have got the authorization.
Besides, the hospital has carried out extensive international exchanges and cooperation on traditional Chinese medicine. Every year, it would receive over 10 groups from all over the world for communication and exchange and more than 100 foreign medical staff for further study. It has established department level cooperation with well known hospitals in the world.
