Renovation Brightens up Shikumen Lanes
By Chai Bin
Sweet-scented osmanthus, magnolia, grapes, figs, loquat, etc., have been recently planted in nearly 100,000-square-meter area of Shanyin Road historical and cultural area, which radiates a new luster of three Shikumen lanes.
Well built by North Sichuan Road Sub-district, Shanyin Road historical and cultural area boasts new beautiful scenery. Xingyefang Lane, Hengfengli Lane and other old-fashion Shikumen lanes have been changed quietly to literary lane, floral lane and tea-aroma lane and so on according to their own conditions, which changes the no-plant history of Shikumen and builds a mutually-concerned relationship between the residents. The 200-meter Xingyefang Lane is surrounded by nearly 70 kinds of plants, with antiqued mailboxes, potted plants and other little ornaments embellished among them.
A number of calligraphy and painting works created by the residents are hung on the outer walls of the lanes, and the profound cultural contents attract many residents to have leisure, take exercise, sip tea and have some recreation under the trees. In Hengfengli Floral Lane, monthly roses and camellia flowers are planted on the both sides. According to the residents, the renovation makes them seem to be in a botanical garden. With the beautiful environment, they enjoy more ease of mind and hope that the livable environment can be preserved for as long as possible.
