Introduction to Shanghai Music Valley

Location

As the project of Hongkou Cultural Creative industry, Shanghai Music Valley (SMV) covers an area of 281,000 square meters, reaching Aisi Children Park on the north, Jiulong Road on the west, Zhoujiazui Road on the south, and Hailun Road on the east. It takes merely 5-10 minutes to the Bund from SMV.

History and Culture
Yujing Port, Hongkou Port, Shajing Port and other waterways crisscross in the area.There are also distinctive Shikumen buildings.Up to now, it is the only historic and cultural region with well preserved water system in Shanghai. It is also the most representative geographical and cultural landmark in the city evolution of Shanghai. Epitomizing the development of Hongkou District in the past century and witnessing the exchange and communication of various cultures in Shanghai of the modern time, it is an important cultural resource for the future development of the north Bund and the urban tourism in Shanghai.

Construction of Public Facilities
The government of Hongkou District initiated the construction of public facilities in SMV in 2011. So far, the first phase of the landscape lighting project has been completed. The restructuring of flood prevention wall and the pedestrian way for viewing water landscape will be finished in June, 2013. The reconstruction of cobblestone road along Harbin Road will be started soon, and the application for national 3A scenic spot will also be launched in 2013.

Policy Support
Hongkou District issued Regulation on the Use of Special Fund for Developing Culture, Creative, and Tourism Industry (Trial) on April 11, 2011.It is clarified that the government will set up 50 million Yuan special fund for developing cultural and tourism industry annually to support the construction of Shanghai Music Valley, provide a certain amount of rental subsidy for enterprises in culture, creative, music, and related industry entering the area, provide corresponding capital support for the application of projects in cultural creation industry, and promote the building of public service platform and the creation of original works to lay a solid foundation for a bigger and stronger culture creative industry.

Project Profiles
Among the projects in the music valley, 3 of them are completed, 3 of them are under construction, and one of them is to be constructed. The completed projects are China Music Industry Park, 1933 Shanghai, and 1913 Shanghai; the project to be constructed is the Exhibition and Experience Center of the music valley; the projects under construction include Sanjiaodi Art Park, Jiaxing Theater, and Peninsula Bay Project.
1. China Music Industry Park at No. 46 Liaoning Road  
In November 2009, China Music Industry Park – Shanghai was established by Shanghai Synergy Culture & Entertainment Group with the authorization by General Administration of Press and Publication of China. Currently, the construction area has reached over 6,000 square meters. Music Production Center, Audio-visual Products Distribution Center, Public Service Platform for Art Training, aLMS Cloud-based Chain Music Marketing Platform, and so on, are taking shape.
2. The construction of Shanghai 1933 is funded by the Municipal Committee in 1933. It used to be the slaughter house of the city designed by a famous British Designer and constructed by a well-known construction company in China. After rebuilding, the construction area is about 31,700 square meters. It integrates international delicacy and shopping plaza, drama and music show, and themed party. It is worth mentioning that the"Sky Theater" of over 1500 square meters has become the center of performance in north Shanghai.  (At present, there are still 1500 square meters office space for rent.)
3. Located at Harbin Road, Shanghai 1913 covers an area of 2539 square meters and its construction area is about 6900 square meters. Built in 1920s,it was original the affiliated ice plant of the Slaughter House under the Municipal Committee and later the walk-in-cooler of Shanghai Beef and Mutton Factory.  The current Shanghai 1913 preserved the European fashion and British style of the old building. At present, over 30 cultural communication and digital media companies has entered the area and the occupancy rate is 100%.
4. Located at No.230-262 of Jiaxing Road, the Sanjiaodi Art Park is still under construction. The site of the five floor building was formally the headquarters of Shanghai Rickshaw Puller Association before the liberation of China. The functional area of the park will be used as studios of artists, featured coffee bars, and art galleries upon completion. (The project covering a total area of 7000 square meters is expected to be completed at the end of the year.)
5. Peninsula Bay project is situated at No.735 Liyang Road. Surrounded on three sides by water, the project consists of 5 main buildings with a construction area of 15000 square meters. Building 3, the major building, was formerly known as "Harbin Building". The American style building was built bewteen 1925 to 1937. It was originally the office building of Huifang Sawmill Company opened by American businessman. Peninsula Bay will become a multimedia demonstration base integrating music, cultural shows, and visual interaction after openning.
6. Jiaxing Theater is at No.267 of east Jiaxing Road. Covering an area of 627 square meters, it has a construction area of 1600 square meters. As one of the earliest cinemas in Shanghai, it was invested and built by Shanghai Land Investment Co., Ltd. in 1931.  After the construction work finished, it was rented by Chinese businessmen.On June 19, 1932, it was officially opened under the name Paradise Theater.  At the early stage, it has both the function of cinema and theater. In January 1942, it was renamed into Jiaxing Grand Theater and later into Jiaxing Theater in 1970. The project will be completed in June 2013 and the first performance in the exclusive theater for SNH 48--the Star Dream Theater will be launched on August 30.
7. The Tourist Reception Center of SMV to be constructed locates at No. 651 Liyang Road near the south gate of the music valley. The total construction area is 1480 square meters. Its major function is to provide tourists reception service and show the valley to them. Some related entertainment projects like music performance bars, featured coffee bars, and so on, will also be added into the plan to make it a fashionable region integrating the functions of art, entertainment, and office.

Culture and Music Events
The First China International Youth Magician Tournament and Magic Carnival 2012 was held in Shanghai 1933 successfully. The drama show in the Sky Theater of Shanghai 1933 will make it a gathering place of pioneering performance of "the Next Broadway". In September 2012, Shanghai Synergy Culture & Entertainment Group organized "China-US Music Business Summit" in China Music Industry Park. The event promoted the information exchange and business negotiation of the music circle in China and the US and expanded the influence of the art functional area of the music valley.  "The 3D project light and music show on old buildings of Shanghai 1933" is an important part of the "Demonstration Project of the Integration of Culture and Science" of the Shanghai Municipal Science Committee. The large scale outdoor creative 5D light show themed "Show Hongkou, Lantern Festival Celebration" was staged at Shanghai 1933 in SMV.
