Business and Tourism Thrives at the Beginning of Year of the Pig
15.79 Percent up of Growth in Retailing and Catering Business than the Previous Year
Tourist Attractions Received 199,100 Tourists

According to the Hongkou District Business Commission, commodity market remains stable and fast growth during the 7-day-long Spring Festival holidays. Statistics showed that from February 4 to February 10, 21 enterprises under the scope of the district’s intensive sampling monitoring realized sales of 98.6321 million yuan, 15.79 percent up than that of the Spring Festival golden week last year.
This year, consumers continued to spend a lot on making special purchases for the Spring Festival and New Year’s Eve dinner. Shopping malls and department stores launched diversified sales promotions during the Spring Festival holidays.
Sales promotions already started in the retailing sector before the Spring Festival. Hypermarkets and supermarkets, such as LOTUS and Carrefour, offered discount coupons and New Year’s gifts to consumers who had purchased certain amounts of commodities. Stores taking new retailing forms and online shopping websites were also thriving in business. Alibaba’s Hema Fresh Store offered a discount of 12 percent off the regular price to consumers. The store also prolonged its business hours to 24 hours during the Spring Festival holidays to satisfy resident’s needs for shopping. Suning.com offered greater discounts on 3C digital products, kitchen and toilet products, home decoration products, general merchandise and home furnishings. Statistics showed that hypermarkets and supermarkets in Hongkou District realized sales of 10.0688 million yuan during the Spring Festival holidays, 31.48 percent up on year-on-year basis. Sales of online shops were 8.38 million yuan, 1.09 percent up on year-on-year basis.
“Firstly-opened Store Economy” also plays a part in the thriving business. During the Spring Festival holidays, Dinoman Club and Shine Dream Miniature World (Shanghai Pavilion) opened its first stores at the shopping mall of Magnolia Plaza. Dinoman Club is the first “family-oriented science education and entertainment experiencing center” in China with several types of business, such as dining, science education, entertainment and interactive games. This is an ideal place for parents and kids to get knowledge of dinosaurs and take part in science education and interactive activities during the 7-day-long holidays. Shine Dream Miniature World (Shanghai Pavilion) is a miniature theme park consists of two parts: “Vicissitudes of the Bund in the Past 100 Years” and “Magic Town”. The theme park also uses other means of technology, such as interactive game, touch screen display and human-computer interaction, to help tourists know about the city’s history and culture. It aims to become a new landmark of cultural tourism in Shanghai. During the 7-day-long Spring Festival holidays, driven by new commercial platforms, such as the Magnolia Plaza, shopping malls and department stores in Hongkou District realized sales of 69.7437 million yuan, 17.07 percent up on year-on-year basis.
Consumption on dining is another feature of the Spring Festival. New Year’s Eve dinner, family reunion dinner and relative gathering dinner plays a major part in citizen’s consumption on dining. Restaurants that cater to common people’s tastes and have distinctive features are most welcomed by citizens. New Year’s Eve banquets in restaurants have been sold out before the Spring Festival. Occupancy rate was high in restaurants catering to the tastes of different consumers, such as Shunfeng Restaurant and Merrylin Restaurant that offers traditional Chinese dishes, SIPG Cruise Kitchen and Guang-mao-xiang Restaurant that offers snacks with local specialties, Sunrise on the Bund, Baolong Hotel and SUN CHATEAU that offers elegant dining environment and high-end dishes to consumers. A sampling survey shows that during the Spring Festival holidays, catering businesses in Hongkou District realized sales of 8.5735 million yuan, 10.82 percent up on year-on-year basis. Food markets in the district have abundant supply and complete variety of goods. The price of food remains stable.
Tourism market operated normally and orderly, and no safety incidents occurred. According to the data released by Hongkou District Business Commission and Tourism Administration on February 11, travel agencies in Hongkou District received 65,000 tourists, including tourists attending domestic group tours, during the Spring Festival holidays, 16.91 percent up on year-on-year basis. Tourist attractions in Hongkou received 199,100 tourists, 21.92 percent up on year-on-year basis.
