Revolution-Books-Reading Rooted in Communities

On August 17, a relay reading themed with “Book Scents Drifting along, Revolution Stories Reading over” was held at all sub-district libraries in Hongkou. At the main venue of Jiangwan Town Sub-district Library, Wu Qiang, Standing Member of the CPC District Committee and Director of the Publicity Department and the other officials presented a batch of books about revolution enclosing the Stories from President Xi to all sub-district libraries and representatives of privately-operated online-popular bookstores. The special cabinet for revolution books reading has been positioned visibly in the library. After launching the ceremony, various programs are performed in all sub-district libraries, leading a groovy inclination to read revolution books.
In Jiangwan Town Sub-district Library, sitting around library staff with other fellows, 9-year-old Chen Yuying is wholly attracted by a story about a little hero in Anti-Japanese War fighting against invaders with wisdom. Chen said, “The book is named A Little Hero in Anti-Japanese War. The character is not afraid of danger and fights with enemies for important intelligence. This patriotism should be carried forward.”
In the meanwhile, the special cabinet gets attention of 68-year-old Zhu Fang. He was born in October 1949, with the same age of the PRC. He picks up and reads over the Stories from President Xi, which is strongly recommended by readers in the Shanghai Book Fair. “Reading makes me knowledgeable. When I was in junior middle school in 1963, I had read a book named How the Steel Was Tempered. I was moved by Pavel Korchagin’s stories so deeply that I dreamed to work and live like he did.” Zhu said, “The book had great impact on my life. It is my choice for revolution-books-reading.” And he compliments that it is more convenient to find books while the special cabinet collectively recommending excellent ones to us.
It is introduced that during the Shanghai Book Fair, combining with characteristics of “Red Culture” in Hongkou, the relay reading is aimed to attract a bunch of younger “Red Fans” whilst converging the elder. It is expected that the younger generation can have further understanding and be more confident in the current development of China, the development path of China and Chinese culture heritage and innovation etc. Actually, revolution and Hongkou are both involved in “Red Fans”. Retroacting its red culture, Hongkou has prime literature advantages since modern times. An array of famous writers, such as Lu Xun, Mao Dun and Ding Ling, had worked and lived here, with their striving history and fabulous works innovated. The 4th National Congress of the Communist Party of China was also convened here. As one of the birthplaces of the Party, Hongkou is a superior location for training “Red Fans” with its pure red culture.
It is worth mentioning that this relay reading greatly enriches collection resources of sub-district libraries. The Publicity Department of the CPC District Committee and the District Culture Bureau donated books toward all sub-district libraries through culture distribution, including Precise Analysis for Reading Notes by Chairman Mao, Stories from President Xi and Hello, the Belt and Road. Depending on libraries rooted in communities, the Revolution Book Fair was displayed nearby, which is better for expansion of revolution-books-reading.
In addition, two online-popular bookstores were introduced into this relay reading, JIC Bookstore and Upper Bookstore. The operators said that it is good for both readers and bookstores to establish a “Revolution-Book-Reading Zone” in the communities and stores through culture distribution service by privately-operated bookstores.
In this relay reading, with “Revolutionary Stories from Moms”, Reading Flash Mob, Stories from Veterans and a Micro-lesson for the Communist Party included, serial activities are organized to satisfy different-aged readers.
