In the face of global economic uncertainty, US-based logistics real estate leader Prologis is reaffirming its commitment to the Chinese market, choosing to expand its presence in Shanghai’s Hongkou District.
“China’s economy is steadily recovering, and its consumer market holds immense potential,” said Hamid R. Moghadam, co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Prologis, during the 2025 China Development Forum in late March.
“We plan to increase investment in China and seize the opportunities presented by consumption upgrades.”
Founded in 1983, Prologis operates in 20 countries and manages assets exceeding US$198 billion. It serves more than 6,500 global clients across industries such as retail, e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, and automotive.
Since entering China in 2003, Prologis has headquartered its China operations in Hongkou, Shanghai — a decision the company credits for its success in navigating market shifts and sustaining long-term growth.
Prologis currently operates 44 logistics centers across 24 key Chinese cities, totaling 5.3 million square meters of industrial space.
The company has built a comprehensive logistics network linked to airports, seaports, and major highway hubs. In 2024, Prologis China was officially recognized as a regional headquarters for a multinational company in Hongkou.
Moghadam attributed much of the company’s confidence to the district’s pro-business approach. Hongkou’s government has prioritized business environment reforms as a “core initiative,” streamlining administrative processes, enhancing legal frameworks, and offering tailored policy support. These measures have provided companies like Prologis with a stable foundation for expansion.
Hongkou’s evolving role as a hub for global enterprise is emblematic of Shanghai’s broader ambition to become an international consumption and logistics center. The district’s ability to align strategic policy support with the specific needs of multinational corporations has made it a magnet for investment.
Hongkou plans to further enhance its business ecosystem with what officials describe as a “warm and efficient” environment — one that fosters innovation, encourages global partnerships, and supports high-quality economic development.
