The "Hongkou Modern Sports City" project was officially launched on September 2, alongside a signing ceremony for key district projects.
The initiative marks a significant step in revitalizing the Sichuan Road N. commercial area, integrating sports, shopping, leisure, and entertainment into one vibrant space.
The site for the "Hongkou Modern Sports City" is the former Tianxing Department Store at 2068-2134 Sichuan Road N. This building, covering a 2,556 square meter plot with a 6-story structure, sits near major cultural landmarks such as Duolun Road Cultural Celebrity Street and Tian’ai Road. It will synergize with the Hongkou Football Stadium and Luxun Park, creating a comprehensive sports and leisure ecosystem.
Tianxing Department Store, established in 1995, has seen its traditional business model become outdated amid evolving consumer trends.
In response, Hongkou District is collaborating with Shanghai Changyuan Culture (Group) Co., Ltd. and the Shanghai Guojin Sports Management Center to remodel the building into a cutting-edge sports and retail hub.
The "Hongkou Modern Sports City" will employ a "sports + business + trends" model. The project aims to invigorate the Sichuan Road N. area by merging sports facilities, retail spaces, and cultural activities. Among the new sports offerings are pickleball, squash, and archery, catering to younger, active demographics.
Incorporating the commercial benefits of Hongkou Football Stadium, the redevelopment will elevate the sports industry within the district while enhancing the shopping and recreational experience.
Furthermore, the project's completion is expected by the second quarter of 2025. Along with the internal renovations, the plan also includes a facelift for street-facing shops, incorporating more sports-themed elements to reflect the area's new identity.
The project is part of Hongkou District’s broader strategy to spur urban renewal, align with cultural preservation efforts, and enhance the commercial vitality of the Sichuan Road N. area. The district is pushing for the integration of sports, culture, tourism, and commerce, further fostering local economic growth.
By tapping into the unique advantages of Sichuan Road N. and surrounding historical and cultural assets, the project aims to create a more dynamic, consumer-driven commercial hub.
The "Hongkou Modern Sports City" is poised to become a key driver of regional development, enhancing the sports and leisure industry while revitalizing one of Shanghai’s most historic commercial districts.
