With its spacious and bright hall, uniformly styled walls and floors, and clean, elderly-friendly bathrooms, Ruixin Nursing Home feels like a standardized chain hotel—orderly yet cozy. Elderly residents can enjoy ample space to relax and spend their twilight years comfortably.
The first phase of upgrades at Ruixin Nursing Home, at 600 Chifeng Road, was completed. According to the Hongkou Civil Affairs Bureau’s standards for nursing home construction, three floors of Building A underwent a complete renovation, updating all hardware and facilities to better serve the elderly.
Eighty-four-year-old Huang Xiangfa and his wife, Zhang Jindi, have lived at Ruixin Nursing Home for about seven years. Their tidy and sunny 10-square-meter room has two beds, a refrigerator, a TV, and an air conditioner.
“We even brought our wedding photo here; this is our home now,” Huang said with a smile. After suffering a stroke eight years ago, Huang moved into the nursing home with his wife post-hospitalization.
“There’s someone to cook and take care of us here, so we don’t trouble our children. It’s great.” Huang has since recovered well, now able to walk freely and even help care for his ailing wife.
At Ruixin, there are many couples like the Huangs. Those who prefer solitude can opt for single rooms, like Auntie Xie, who at over 90 years old, still enjoys doing her own cleaning. Her room is warm and tidy.
“During the standardization upgrades, we replaced all the beds with adjustable nursing beds to prevent falls. Bathrooms were renovated to be elderly-friendly, with dual handrails beside the toilet for convenience and safety. Even the curtains are fire-resistant, updated strictly to meet standards,” said Chen Xia, the director of Ruixin Nursing Home.
Each bed has a call bell and night light above it, and the doors have check-in points for caregivers to clock in hourly and check on the residents.
The kitchen was another focus of the upgrade. Following standardized construction requirements, the kitchen equipment was completely updated, with added fire safety facilities at the stoves. The pantry is dry and tidy, with food stored off the ground. Additionally, the third-floor platform was renovated to include a dedicated laundry room and drying area for the residents’ clothes.
According to the “2024 Hongkou District 10 Major Enhancement Action Plan” formulated by the district government, the bureau has prioritized improving elderly care services as a key aspect of public welfare.
The bureau is guiding several nursing homes to upgrade their facilities and services in line with national and local standards, focusing on care capabilities, hardware facilities, and institutional management.
So far, standardized documents for the elderly care sector have been reviewed, and upgrades for four nursing homes—Hongye, Liangcheng Community, Ruixin, and Yixian Hongfu—are being systematically advanced.
