Shanghai's first and only "Nurse Activity Base" was unveiled in Heping Park, Hongkou District on May 12, which is the International Nurses Day.
The initiative aims to further promote the spirit of Florence Nightingale and honor the noble tradition of nursing.
A 4-meter-tall nurse statue, located next to the large lawn in Heping Park, was the focal point of the unveiling ceremony. The statue, depicting a smiling nurse holding a book and dressed in a nurse's uniform, is adorned with flowers, symbolizing a tribute to the dedication of past and present nurses.
"This statue was erected on International Nurses Day in 1987 in Heping Park to express the love and respect of Shanghai’s people for the 'angels in white'," explained a representative from the Shanghai Health System Youth Talent Reward Foundation during the ceremony.
"The unveiling ceremony is meant to inspire nurses with a sense of mission and responsibility, enhance their social status and professional image, and promote the spirit of Nightingale by spreading care and warmth."
Following the unveiling ceremony, nursing teams from over 10 hospitals across the city showcased their skills and talents.
They performed various activities, from displaying their artistic talents to educating the public about traditional Chinese medicine and providing convenient services.
"We are demonstrating how to make an Artemisia wellness hammer," said a member of the Hongkou nursing team, which includes nurses from Jiangwan Hospital, Hongkou Mental Health Center, and Quyang Road Community Health Service Center.
"The Artemisia wellness hammer combines the warming power of traditional Artemisia with the comfort of modern massage. Citizens can make one themselves and use it to gently tap various parts of their body during leisure time, helping to relieve muscle fatigue and relax tense nerves."
The event was organized by the Shanghai Health Commission and the foundation, and hosted by the Hongkou Health Commission and the "Zuo Ying Nursing Award" Association.
