China and Japan are separated by a strip of water, and our friendly exchanges are rooted in history. Revolutionary pioneers such as Sun Yat-sen and Chen Duxiu traveled between the North Bund of Hongkou and Japan, while celebrities such as Lu Xun and Guo Moruo traveled east to study in Japan. In 1984, more than 3,000 young delegations from Japan planted cherry trees brought from Japan together in Lu Xun Park in Hongkou.
At present, Hongkou District has established a friendly exchange relationship with Toyonaka City, Japan. The Toyonaka City Japan China Friendship Association and the Lu Xun Cultural Foundation have held cultural exchange activities in the two places for many times. Hongkou has close economic, trade, cultural, and other exchanges with Japan. The "China Merchants Aden" cruise ship, which departed from the North Bund, has sailed all the way to the nine major cities in Japan. There are over 100 Japanese-funded enterprises operating in Hongkou, including Panasonic Electric Appliances, Kose Group, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and ORIX Group, which have become an important force in Hongkou's open economy.
