Hongkou originated its name from Hongkou Port. Located in the northeast part of Shanghai, Hongkou boasts of an area of 23.4km² and governs 8 communities, with a total population of 757,500.
Hongkou is one of the earliest opening-up areas in China, since the opening of Shanghai port. Hongkou has been an important hub of shipping, trade and commodities, with profound cultural heritage lasting for over a hundred years. President Xi Jinping assessed Hongkou as “the cradle of Shanghai culture, the origin of advanced culture and the hub of cultural celebrities”.
In recent years, with the rapid social and economic development, Hongkou has been further optimizing the investment environment and highlighting the location advantage. Having formed the “2+4+X” industrial system and a framework of three functional areas — the South Functional Area, the Middle Functional Area and the North Functional Area, Hongkou will push forward the synergistic development of industries and functions as a whole.
Hongkou, bearing the glorious past and experiencing the current rapid changes, is actively participating in the process of building Shanghai into an international metropolis with “Five Centers”. In the new era, Hongkou will have unlimited business opportunities.
Currently, Hongkou District is witnessing a historic opportunity of development. According to the new round of planning, the North Bund will be built into a “headquarters city with global operations, a core area of the central activity area, and a world-class meeting room”. About 8.4 million square meters of construction area has been planned, including dozens of top-level office buildings which will house about 100 headquarters of multinational firms, international organizations and functional institutes.
