On August 21, a show about current sex ratio at birth was staged in Hongkou District Worker’s Culture and Sports Center, present at which were Zhang Meixing from Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission, Deputy Chief of Hongkou District Li Guohua and Vice Chairman of CPPCC Hongkou Committee Xu Aidi.
Themed at “encouraging balance between the sexes to build up a truly harmonious society”, the show pointed at the discrimination against girls, though not so commonly found today, that used to prevail in rural areas, and stressed the severe phenomenon of males largely outnumbering females today. With short comedies, plays and poetry reading that are popular with people, the show was intended to spread a sound philosophy of marriage and maternity, and these instructive and entertaining performances, with delicate designs, won great applause from the audience.
Reports say, shows themed at family planning have been given for 6 years in a row as a key measure of publicity about sex ratio at birth in the district, aimed to arouse people’s attention to the unbalanced sex ratio today, help change the situation and create an environment especially favorable for girls’ growing.
