During the summer vacation, a group of children will still wear red scarves and rush to the classroom before 8 o’clock as scheduled. What kinds of courses are so “appetizing” to children? It turned out to be a new upgrade titled “Love Summer Care Class” based on the 2018 class schedule. Compared with last year, this year’s summer classes are more “down-to-earth”, and the CYL District Committee hopes that all students will be able to change into talents in the summer vacation.
The Good Atmosphere to Attract Little Die-Hard Fans
“Use your two hands to hold the bag strap first, then lift the bag over your head to resist the murder weapon …” On July 11, at the Love Summer Care Class of Quyang No. 4 Primary School, the martial arts teacher is showing a group of actions for the children. This is the latest special course (Teenagers’ Self Defense) sponsored by the school.
In the class, the teacher will not only teach basic skills of self-defense such as “5-step boxing” and “fighting”, but also give solutions to hot issues such as being lost and abducted, school bullying, calling 110 and asking for help in an array of cases. “I have studied karate in the summer class before, but it is the first time that I specially study self-defense”, says Shi Jiayi, a die-hard fan of the class. She has the most say in the upgraded summer care class. It is the fourth time for her to participate in the summer care class. As a summer vacation approaches every year, she will pay close attention to the application and registration time for the class and urge her mother to enroll early. The enough room for artistic expression, the interesting courses, and the full interaction with peers attracted her. After a week of classes, she delightedly finds that, the meals are getting better.
Sharing the High Quality Teaching Resources
Eggplant, pumpkin, pomegranate, grape, fig ... Shi Jiayi found a piece of “treasure land” in the roof garden of Quyang No. 4 Primary School. She named several kinds of fruits, which impressed children of the same age. “I also know that covering the grapes with bags is to prevent birds from stealing food.” Although Guo Ruicheng is only a pupil at the grade 2, he is also eager to try. This is an interactive experience class specially designed as per the teaching hardware facilities of the class site. The “sprouting fruit and vegetable garden” in Quyang No. 4 Primary School’s roof gardens has become a “natural classroom” for children to learn knowledge of agricultural science on spot. Guo Ruicheng said that he was very interested in agricultural knowledge, and his parents rented him a “mini farm” in Hengsha Island last year. However, due to the long journey and the busy work of his parents, it was difficult to find time to visit at the site. This time, I did not expect to experience a vegetable garden life through the summer classes at the “home gate”. In addition to the “small city farm”, there are such experience courses as the new landscape of Shanghai’s top 10 campuses, “the ancient Chinese ship building”, at Quyang No. 4 Primary School. “We hope that Hongkou’s children may share high-quality teaching resources via the platform of Love Summer Care Class”, said Zhao Tianxu, head of Quyang Road Sub-district Class.
As reported, this year, the children at the Quyang Road Sub-district Class also received “teaching materials”, of which Chinese Excellent Traditional Culture Classics and Youth Self-protection Reader were compiled by the third-party organization of the Summer Care Class. The person in charge of the company said that, the teaching materials may help the primary school students systematically digest the knowledge in the class, and promote the standardization of running the summer classes.
Hold up “the Safety Umbrella” for Children
No matter how exciting the special courses are, parents are most concerned about the safety of their children. The CYL District Committee has made safety its top priority, and it has specially established a 2019 safety inspection team for love summer care class to provide the children with a “safety umbrella” in summer. Retired civilian police officer Zhuang Xueyong is the head of the safety inspection group. He says: “This is the second year that I have been “on guard” for the Love Summer Vacation Class.” Although the locations of the classes are more scattered than last year, the safety inspection team insists on inspecting the 9 classes in the entire area within two days. At the inspection on each class, Zhuang will fill in a safety inspection record, which is divided into five categories of “site safety”, “water and electricity facilities”, “safety and protection”, and “surrounding public safety”, and each category has relevant sub-divisions. If any there are hidden dangers in the inspection, Zhuang will immediately report the situation and handle on the same day. He tells that the soft and hard environments of the selected classes this year are better than last year. For example, the classroom doors are equipped with anti-pinch devices, and the corners of desks and tables are specially equipped with anti-collision strips. He reminds that the teachers and volunteers of each class do not be panic if suspicious people are found at the gate of the teaching site. They can dial 110 or ask for help to the safety office of the sub-district nearby.
